General Manager: A Day In The Life

Brd Mark New

5:30am Wake up for my morning 5km run up the gallops in Newmarket. Nothing better than a bit of exercise in the morning to get me set for the day. Then I hit the shower, 5 eggs down in one and jump in the car to work.

7:45am Arrive at the Bradfield Centre and get set for the day with the team, we are ready to welcome our members to the building. Checking our meeting rooms / event spaces and that there is plenty of coffee beans in coffee machines for that all in important caffeine boost to kickstart the day. I do a customer walk most mornings to check for various things like cleanliness and presentation.

9am Catch up with the centre / café team to discuss any questions / queries and grab a double espresso to get me firing on all cylinders for the day ahead.

The café water urn is broken, what shall the café do to get boiling water for all the hot drinks they sell. We have a spare in the plantroom for this very occasion. I go to get it and check the building management system is running without any faults while I’m up there. This runs all the buildings air conditioning and heating pumps and boilers.

10am I jump on the emails and respond to a few. I’m working on an 18-month deal on a 32-desk private office. I’m trying to sell it to a up and coming Tech Start up in SaaS (Software as a Service) they are asking me for detail on the terms and conditions we have agreed. At the end of the previous day, I plan what I have to do for the following day with my Trello board prioritising what needs to be completed. I run through some of the items on this and action accordingly.

12noon I take my lunch. I’m not one to spend my lunch hour relaxing and reading a book. Its leg day at the Trinity Centre Gym I have a PT class and it’s going to be brutal. Pumped from smashing my personal best I return back to the Bradfield Centre for some Chicken and Rice to keep me going until the rest of the day.

1pm Run through with my colleague the sales pipeline and what needs to be done to get these new exciting tech companies into the building. Admin is a big part of my role we have to do various checks in order to close our deals.

2:30pm Time for another caffeine boost so I swerve the lift and grab a coffee from our beautifully presented kitchen on the 1st floor. While up there I bump into a member to discuss their next funding round and how we can help. They ask if I can introduce them to a Venture Capitalist to help them. I continue to talk to other members as I’m doing a quick walk round. I need to organise some additional keys for an office. I contact the locksmiths to send me 3 extra keys out.

3pm I have a second tour booked for the 32-desk deal I’m working on. They want to bring some of the team in to see the space and make a final decision.

4pm Catch up on various admin and emails and discuss with the team what’s happening for the following day. We have the event space booked out for the next 5 days so want to make sure the logistics of the day is sorted and that the caterers are fully aware.

4:45pm Get a phone call with instructions to issue the agreement for the 32-desk deal. Great end to the day. Although it doesn’t stop here.

5pm Close up the building with the team, checking my emails for final time until the morning.

6pm Pick my daughter up from Gymnastics. Back home for dinner as a family and then out to help coach with my sons Football Team.
